How to Care For Your Pearl Jewellery
Pearls are often referred to as ‘timeless’ – they never go out of style. However, pearls are delicate and require proper care to keep them looking their best. Here are our top tips for preserving your pearls and making sure they look spectacular for generations to come.
The Golden Rule for Wearing Pearl Jewellery:
The rule we share with all our customers is that pearl jewellery should be the last thing you put on in the morning and the first thing you take off at night. Cosmetics, hair products and perfume can all cause damage to pearl jewellery, so following this rule will help you preserve your pearls’ lustre. It is also recommended that you don’t wear pearl jewellery when in the water or in high temperatures. However, don’t let this make you frightened to wear your pearls, pearls benefit from being in contact with the skin – it prevents them from dehydrating and keeps them looking their best.
Pearl Storage
We store all our pearl items separately from other jewellery – segmented jewellery boxes are great for this! This is because pearls may be scratched by other jewellery and gemstones. To prevent your jewellery from getting tangled, ensure all clasps are fastened and lay them down flat. When travelling use a jewellery pouch to keep your pearls separate where possible.
Pearl Stringing
A lot of our pearl jewellery is strung on a fine silk string. It is recommended that you have these items restrung every 1-4 years, depending on how often the item is worn. Keep an eye on the string; if there are signs of stretching, discolouration or fraying have the item restrung as soon as possible to avoid the string breaking.
Cleaning Pearls
Under no circumstances should you clean pearl jewellery in an ultrasonic cleaner or with a toothbrush. The best way to keep pearls looking radiant is to wipe them gently with a clean, soft cloth when necessary. This will remove any surface dirt, keeping the pearls’ lustre visible.
